Women face unique challenges in the workplace, including the physical and emotional symptoms of menopause, barriers to healthcare and support, and the effect of pelvic floor disorders on work.  We’ll tackle these challenges and also examine the impact of autoimmune diseases and migraines on work, and ways employers can better support and accommodate these conditions.

Sharon Ellen Smith MD, MBA, FACP

Corporate Medical Director

Dr. Sharon E. Smith is the Corporate Medical Director for the Estee Lauder Companies. In this role she is responsible for developing and supporting a culture of health, working with the Global Benefits team to address health and wellness gaps that affect employees and their families. She is also a partner in crisis leadership, addressing infectious disease and illness threats that affect ELC’s employees around the world.

Previously she served as Chief Medical Officer for Prudential Life Insurance Company of America as part of their Health and Benefits Center of Expertise. In that role Dr. Smith provided guidance on all clinical programs, including programs that support the overall health and well-being of Prudential’s employees, and consultative support for the medical and pharmacy benefits programs.

Dr. Smith has practiced Internal Medicine for over 20 years in diverse roles and has held medical leadership positions since 2003. She holds a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Howard University College of Medicine, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Columbia Business School.  She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Lifestyle Medicine, and is a Certified Medical Review Officer.  Dr. Smith has several professional affiliations and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

When not at work Dr. Smith is active in the community as a member of several organizations. She is a member of the North Manhattan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and is a co-chair of the Health and Wellness committee, as well as a working member on several other committees. She is the chair of the Good Health Wins committee of her local section of the National Council of Negro Women. Dr. Smith is active in the alumni association Columbia Business School, where she is chair of the Hermes Society, co-Chair of The Student Relief Fund, and a founding member of the Columbia Women’s Circle.

Jennesa Atherton, PT, DPT

Dr. Jennesa Atherton, PT, DPT, has worked extensively with orthopedic and pelvic-health patients. While working clinics, she quickly recognized limitations and barriers to care with the current healthcare model, with respect to cost, accessibility and quality. Jennesa joined Sword Health in March of 2021 as a DPT working with Sword patients. Jennesa is a founding team member of Bloom, the next-generation pelvic-health solution developed by Sword Health. She leads Clinical Affairs, connecting members with pelvic therapy from home.

Jennesa advocates for innovative approaches to reach more people with advanced technology. Jennesa Atherton holds a Bachelor of Arts from Augustana College, and a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Northern Illinois University. She lives in the Windy City with her husband, Derrick, and goldendoodle, Jack.

Barb Dehn, NP, NCMP, FAANP

Barb Dehn is a practicing Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, award-winning author, and nationally recognized health expert. She holds a B.S. from Boston College and earned her Master's degree at the University of California, San Francisco. She is certified by the North American Menopause Society and is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

Nirali Patel

Medical Outcomes and Science Liaison

In June of 2021, Nirali began a pharmaceutical industry role as the Medical Outcomes and Science Liaison (MOSL) in the New York region (New York City and New Jersey) for Abbvie.  Within this role, she supports key regional payor accounts by providing economic and clinical information to drive formulary decisions. Prior to joining Abbvie, Nirali spent several years as the Lead Clinical Pharmacist on the Medical and Utilization Management team working alongside medical directors and other health care professionals to provide coverage determination of specialty medications based on medical necessity, policy evaluation and cost analysis at Healthcare Partners. She implemented the site of service redirection and biologic conversion to biosimilars programs at her organization. She is a member of the Industry Pharmacist Organization and earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. She has past experiences in the PBM, health plan and retail setting adding to the versatility of understanding the limitations associated with access to health care services. Nirali is a full-time mother and a pharmacist. Outside of work she loves spending time with her 5-year-old daughter Siara, 3- year-old son Om and husband Chirag. She also enjoys eating healthy, exercising, reading, and traveling.
