Invisible but Impactful: The Employer Imperative in Crohn’s & Colitis Care

IBD often goes unseen—until it leads to surgeries, ER visits, or disability claims. This session highlights what’s changing in the clinical landscape, where care gaps persist, and how employers can design benefits, navigation, and accommodations that lead to better outcomes and lower costs.

Cuckoo Choudhary, MD, FACP, AGAF, FCCP, FAMWA

Dorrance H. Hamilton Professor of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Dr. Cuckoo Choudhary is the Dorrance H. Hamilton Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Thomas Jefferson University, where she also leads the division’s initiatives in Women’s Health, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. A general gastroenterologist with a special focus on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Dr. Choudhary has received fellowships from prominent organizations, including the American College of Physicians, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Medical Women’s Association, and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

Dr. Choudhary earned her medical degree in India, completed her Internal Medicine residency at Lankenau Hospital in Pennsylvania, and pursued a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at Thomas Jefferson University. Her clinical and academic work spans a wide array of topics, including IBD, gender differences in GI disorders, and gastrointestinal conditions that disproportionately affect women. She has been invited to deliver lectures at prestigious international conferences such as the Euro Heart Failure Conference in Paris, the World Congress of Digestive Diseases in Rome, and the Biennial Advances in GI and Hepatology in San Juan.

A passionate educator, Dr. Choudhary is the founder and director of the Jefferson GI and Women’s Health Symposium and serves as co-director of the Annual Advances in Gastroenterology Conference, now in its 43rd year. She also leads the Jefferson GI Enterprise course, which launched in June 2025.

Dr. Choudhary has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on IBD, GI diseases in women, and gastrointestinal issues in the elderly. She is a key contributor to advancing gender equity and inclusion in healthcare, currently co-leading the newly launched Women’s Task Force Committee at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Choudhary is also a member of the AGA Women’s Committee and leads the IBD efforts within the Jefferson GI Enterprise.

Priya Sehgal, MD, MS, MPH

Assistant Professor of Medicine, Gastroenterology & Hepatology; Director of the GI Center for Weight Wellness & Inflammatory Diseases
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital

Priya Sehgal, MD, MS, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and the Director of the GI Center for Weight Wellness & Inflammatory Diseases at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She currently serves as the site principal investigator for several Phase 3 and 4 clinical trials evaluating novel biologics for Crohn’s diseases and ulcerative colitis at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Dr. Sehgal completed her medical degree and Internal Medicine residency at Mount Sinai Hospital and a Gastroenterology fellowship at Columbia University. During her fellowship, she was awarded an NIH T32 training grant and earned a Master’s in Patient-Oriented Research. She also holds a Master of Public Health in Health Policy from Harvard’s School of Public Health and completed an Advanced IBD Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Sehgal is also a member of the Philadelphia Take Steps Executive Council through the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. She is grateful for the opportunity to help advance care, research and community support for all individuals living with IBD.
